Fatal Pedestrian Accident at High Street Intersection in Portsmouth

A pedestrian tragically died following a high-speed two-vehicle crash on Monday, January 12, 2026. The accident happened around 11:50 a.m. in Portsmouth at the intersection of High Street and Virginia Avenue near the London Oaks Apartments.

According to reports, witnesses reported that two vehicles were traveling at a high rate of speed when they crashed into the pedestrian. The victim was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers remained at the scene while police gathered evidence.

Police are investigating the crash, which includes a third vehicle that is part of the investigation. The intersection of High Street and Virginia Avenue was closed for several hours Monday afternoon.

Families’ Rights in VA Wrongful Death Cases

When a pedestrian accident results in a fatality that was caused by someone else’s negligence, Virginia law allows certain family members to pursue compensation through a Virginia wrongful death claim. These claims are separate from any criminal charges or traffic citations that may result from the crash.

Virginia wrongful death claims may seek compensation for:

  • Medical expenses incurred before death
  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Loss of income and financial support
  • Loss of services, care, and guidance
  • Loss of companionship and consortium
  • Mental anguish and emotional suffering

Wrongful death claims in Virginia must be filed by the personal representative of the deceased person’s estate. The personal representative acts on behalf of the deceased’s beneficiaries, who may include surviving spouses, children, parents, and other close family members.

Complex Multi-Vehicle Pedestrian Accidents

Pedestrian accidents involving multiple vehicles present additional legal complexities. Multiple drivers may share responsibility for the collision, and determining liability often requires accident reconstruction expertise.

When more than one vehicle is involved, there may be multiple avenues that could provide compensation to the family. However, insurance companies may dispute which driver bears primary responsibility or whether the pedestrian contributed to the accident.
