Pedestrian Killed by Delivery Truck in Norfolk

A pedestrian was fatally struck by a delivery truck on Rogers Avenue in Norfolk on Friday, February 20, 2026, shortly after 8 p.m.

According to Norfolk Police, the driver of a large delivery truck was attempting to back into a parking lot when the pedestrian was struck. Tragically, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene by Norfolk Fire-Rescue.

The driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. Police report that neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash. The incident is still under investigation.

Families’ Rights in Virginia Wrongful Death Cases

When a pedestrian is killed due to someone else’s negligence, Virginia law allows certain family members to pursue compensation through a Virginia wrongful death claim. These claims are entirely separate from any criminal proceedings or traffic citations that may arise from the investigation.

Virginia wrongful death claims allow families to seek compensation for:

  • Medical expenses incurred prior to death
  • Funeral and burial costs
  • Loss of income and financial support
  • Loss of services, care, and guidance
  • Loss of companionship and consortium
  • Mental anguish and emotional suffering

Eligible beneficiaries may include surviving spouses, children, parents, or other close family members.

Commercial Vehicle Pedestrian Accidents

When a commercial vehicle is involved in a fatal crash, the legal picture can become more involved than a typical accident case.

Liability may extend beyond the individual driver to the trucking company or delivery service that employed them. Employers can be held responsible for the negligent acts of their employees when those acts occur within the scope of their work.

Additionally, factors such as improper vehicle maintenance, inadequate driver training, or pressure to meet delivery deadlines may all play a role in the investigation.

Because commercial carriers typically carry substantial insurance policies, their insurers often move quickly to protect their own interests. Having an attorney experienced with these types of cases in your corner can make a significant difference in the outcome.
