On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, around 11 a.m., a tractor-trailer and car collided at the intersection of Monticello Avenue and East Virginia Beach Boulevard in Norfolk.
According to WAVY, the crash caused extensive damage, with photos from the scene showing the passenger vehicle partially underneath the tractor-trailer.
The accident is still under investigation and no other details are currently available.
How Could This Tractor-Trailer Accident Have Happened?
There are at least two very different scenarios that could potentially explain such a crash.
Scenario 1: The Tractor-Trailer Turned or Crossed in Front of the Car
One possibility is that the passenger vehicle had the right-of-way and the tractor-trailer entered or turned across its path.
Truck drivers must exercise particular caution when making turns because tractor-trailers are substantially longer than passenger vehicles and require considerably more time and space to clear an intersection.
If the car had a green light and the truck driver attempted a turn or other movement across the car’s lane when it was unsafe to do so, the truck driver could potentially be responsible for failing to yield the right-of-way.
Scenario 2: The Car Entered the Intersection When the Truck Had the Right-of-Way
This is another possibility.
The tractor-trailer may have lawfully entered the intersection with a green light or other right-of-way before the passenger vehicle approached.
If the car’s driver entered the intersection against a red light, was traveling too fast to stop, or otherwise failed to yield to a tractor-trailer already crossing the roadway, responsibility for the collision could instead fall on the driver of the passenger vehicle.
